Allure

April 1995
High Priestess of Platforms
by James Servin

I remember being in Aspen, having just written "Landslide" and "Rhiannon" walking around in the snow in a bunny coat, a pair of patchwork jeans that I'd spend my last $30 on, and these very high platform shoes that were kind of beige, kind of cream-colored. They had humongous platform that made me really tall so that I didn't have to cut off the fabulous bottoms of the jeans. Even when platforms went completely out of style, I kept wearing them because I didn't want to go back to being five feet three in a pair of heels.

Career Mauve:

I had my hair streaked at the end of the my tenth-grade year and got in a lot of trouble for it. They didn't just streak it blond...they streaked it silver. My hair was totally ivory. I was grounded for six weeks. But when my hair changed, everything changed. I got to wear grayish plum eye shadow. There was no way I was going back.

Wake-up Call:

Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich had heavy-lidded, sleepy, bedroom eyes. That's how I do mine. I draw the line between the eyebrow and eyelashes and use a kind of goldy brown Lancome powder eye shadow.

Fragrance Brew:

When I first met Mick Fleetwood in 1975, I thought, Now, the way Mick smells is the way everyone should smell. It's such a wonderful spicy, warm smell. He'd leave his velvet vest on a chair, and I'd wish I could take it home with me and make my whole house smell like that. Since I'm allergic to perfume, I do what he does. For the last 15 years, I've been buying oils and mixing them. I start with a sesame base and add musky things to it. I don't like the serious rose stuff, the serious flower stuff.

The Limo Scene:

There will never be anything like those years in Fleetwood Mac -- Fabulous hotels, fabulous airplanes, always first class, and always limousines. I remember walking into a fur salon in 1980 and buying two floor-length fur coats. Of course everybody said, "You're not really going to do that, are you?" And of course I said, "Oh, yes, I really am."

Standing Room Only:

Off my bedroom, I have two mirrored rooms full of clothes that I have not been wearing for 15 years. Then there are three bedrooms in this house, and all those closets are full. I have a dance room that has about ten racks in it, stage clothes and everything. I also have 37 wardrobe boxes that I have not unpacked. I might make half of the dance room a walk-in closet. I might build an addition to the house.

Floored:

Neither Prince nor I is shy to tell the world that we love beautiful things, beautiful fabrics. We can afford to buy them and we do. He once picked me up at the Minneapolis airport at 9:30 in the morning, and we went to his purple house and recorded a song. He was driving about 120 miles an hour in his purple car, with me in my black chiffon stage clothes, him in his purple suit, purple car. We were going so over the speed limit that I said, "If we get pulled over we're dead. Because you and I don't look like we're from this planet."

Loot:

When I play different cities, people's grandmothers' fabulous necklaces are thrown on stage. If I could give it back to them and say "Listen, I can't take this." I would. I have a $50,000 diamond bracelet that somebody gave me. It's absolutely the most stunning bracelet, all diamonds with four Thailand blue sapphires.

Velvet Underground:

I do love leather and I do love lace, but not necessarily together. I'm probably happier in a long black velvet dress, black suede boots, and some kind of really beautiful wrap than I am in anything else. I don't even own a pair of jeans.
